Information for non-UK/Irish citizens who do not have the right to work in the UK and would need to apply for and obtain a visa to do so. Following the UK Leaving the EU, a new immigration system was introduced on 1 January 2021. This applies to new members of staff entering the UK if they are a: Non-UK/Irish national, who does not already have a visa which allows them to work in the UK eg: EEA/Swiss nationals who were not resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 Nationals from non-European countries. From 1 July 2021 EEA/Swiss nationals must present either a status through the EU Settlement Scheme or a visa through the immigration system. Further information about right to work for EEA/Swiss citizens is available at: Understanding your right to work If you do not have documents that show your right to work you will need to apply for permission from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The UKVI website provides a list of visas which you may be able to apply for, to enable you to work in the UK. List of UK work visas Global Talent Visa If you are an academic or researcher who is internationally recognised as a world leader or emerging leader in one of the science or arts fields you may be able to apply for the Global Talent route. Applying for a Global Talent visa is undertaken by the applicant and it is not a sponsored route, therefore you can undertake work with any employer. The application process is a two stage process which is undertaken by the applicant. If you have received a job offer from the University of Edinburgh help will be available from the Immigration Legal Adviser (Staff). The first stage of the process is to apply for endorsement from an organisation approved by UKVI. On attaining this you then apply for the Global Talent visa. There are 4 pathways to this visa route: Appointment Individual Fellowship Endorsed Funder Peer assessment For the Appointment pathway and the Endorsed Funder pathway you will require a letter from the University, known as a ‘statement of guarantee’. If you have received an offer for an academic leadership position at the University and a specific recruitment process has been followed, it will be possible to obtain endorsement through the appointment pathway. If your employment is funded by a grant which appears on the Home Office Endorsed Funder list you may qualify for the Endorsed Funder pathway. Please note you must have 2 years remaining on your contract of employment at the time of application for this pathway. Further Information on Global Talent Visa University Sponsorship It may be possible for the University to sponsor your employment or research in the UK. If the criteria set by the UKVI are met, the University can issue you with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) which means you can apply for a Skilled Worker or Temporary Worker Sponsored Researcher visa.
