Information for UK/Irish citizens, those with settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme and those who hold indefinite leave to remain/settled status in the UK. There are three ways of presenting right to work documentation: In person checks to present a physical document e.g. UK passport Identity Validation Technology (IDVT) e.g. current UK/Irish passports or Irish passport cards Online check using the Home Office system e.g. EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) Settled status or Indefinite Leave to Remain Further information is in the sections below. Procedure for proving your right to work in person When you present your right to work documents in person you should complete the following procedure: Before you start work, attend an in person meeting organised by your local right to work checker/ School/Department Administrator (SDA) Your documents must be checked when you and the checker are both present. The checker will take a clear copy which will be retained. Documents to evidence an ongoing right to work in the UK are outlined in the Home Office List A (below). Document List A (17.58 KB / DOCX) Procedure for proving your right to work using Identity Validation Technology (IDVT) Identity Validation Technology (IDVT) is now in place to check current UK/Irish passports or Irish passport cards online using an Identity Service Provider (IDSP). This is an option for the right to work check to be carried out remotely, alternatively the check can be carried out in person, using a physical passport/passport card. The procedure for carrying out IDVT checks is: You will receive a link by email (valid for 7 days) from your local right to work checker/ School/Department Administrator (SDA). Click on the link and follow the instructions on how to complete the check and upload your documents. On receipt of a positive IDVT check, your right to work checker/SDA will arrange an online meeting with you i.e. a Microsoft Teams call or Zoom call, to confirm your identity matches the IDVT check. Procedure for proving your right to work with a Home Office online check If you are an EEA/Swiss citizen If you have been granted settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you will need to use the online service to evidence your right to work in the UK. To use the online service, please refer to the section below 'Requesting a share code'. Further information about right to work for EEA/Swiss Citizens If you have indefinite leave to remain (ILR) If you have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), you will need to use the online service to evidence your right to work. To use the online service, please refer to the section below 'Requesting a share code'. If you are evidencing your right to work with an ILR vignette/sticker in a current passport, please refer to section 'Procedure for proving your right to work in person'. Please note Home Office rules prevent the University from accepting a visa/ILR vignette (i.e. sticker) that is in an expired passport. You will need to apply to UKVI to have the same visa issued as a BRP. The application to transfer your indefinite leave to remain to a BRP can be found at: Application to transfer indefinite leave to remain Please note, holders of Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) can only evidence their right to work using the Home Office online service. The University can no longer accept a physical BRP for a right to work check. Information about biometric residence permits Requesting a share code When you inform your School/Department that you wish to do the online check, you will be given a University email address to forward the code to. You then access the UK Government website to provide a code to share your data. The University uses this code to confirm your right to work.
